Accountants who know how your trade actually gets paid
We're Alex and Anca. We've been doing the books for hauliers, builders, locums and staffing agencies since 2019, so we know why CIS deductions go missing and what a fuel card does to a bank feed. If that's your world, you'll feel at home here.
Where the money actually leaks
Rarely in one big mistake. Usually in small things a generalist never thinks to ask about, and you find out at year end.
Deductions you never claimed
Overnight allowances if you sleep in the cab. Tools, workwear, the CIS tax that's already been taken off you. Nobody claims these unless they know to ask.
Work that lands back on you
You've paid an accountant, yet somehow you're the one coding the bank feed at 9pm and explaining how agency self-billing works. For the third time.
A bill you didn't expect
With hourly billing, every phone call costs money, so people stop calling. The thing they didn't ask about turns up in January, when it's expensive.
The books get done every month, whether anything's due or not
Since MTD, HMRC wants a summary every quarter. The only calm way to live with that is to keep the books current all the time. So that's what we do.
- Bank feeds connect straight into QuickBooks, so nothing is typed in twice
- Receipts are captured and matched automatically as they come in
- Transactions get categorised every month, against how your trade actually spends
- We prepare each quarterly update, you glance over it and approve, we file it
The software we work in every day
- QuickBooks
- Xero
- FreeAgent
- BrightPay
- Briefcase
We stick to four trades
On purpose. Fewer sectors means we can tell you what normal looks like in yours.
Transport & logistics
Owner-drivers, HGV, couriers, taxi and private hire, haulage operators.
MoreConstruction & trades
CIS subcontractors and contractors, groundworks, and the VAT reverse charge.
MoreHealthcare
Locums, agency nurses, care providers, dentists and private practitioners.
MoreStaffing & recruitment
Agencies running weekly payroll, self-bill invoicing and contractor payments.
MoreMTD started in April. The first deadline has been and gone.
If you're self-employed and earn over £50,000, you now have to keep digital records and send HMRC an update every quarter. The first one was due on 7 August, and the next is due on 7 November. A lot of people missed it, and plenty never knew it existed.
The good news: there's no fine for a missed quarter this year. We can rebuild the records from your bank data, file the late update, and set things up so November takes care of itself.
We handle MTD from £50 a month
- Software set up and your bank connected
- Transactions reviewed and categorised monthly
- All four quarterly updates filed with HMRC
- Final declaration at the end of the year
- Alex or Anca on the phone when you have a question
How it starts
A phone call
Half an hour, usually with Alex. Tell us how the business runs and what's annoying you. Sometimes the honest answer is that your current setup is fine, and we'll say so.
A fixed price in writing
We put the scope and the price in writing before you commit to anything. If the work grows later, we agree a new figure with you first.
We take it from there
We write to your old accountant, move the records over and set up the software. The switch costs you about one email. Most people are running inside two weeks.
You'll never get a bill you didn't agree to first
- The fee is fixed and agreed in writing before any work starts
- Ringing us costs nothing. Questions are part of the fee
- If you don't need something we sell, we'll tell you
- You own your data and your software licences, not us
- And if you ever leave, we hand everything over without fuss
- We work in English and Romanian, whichever is easier for you
What clients say when we're not in the room

★★★★★"With a perfect mix of professionalism and human warmth, Alex and Anca have become not just my trusted business partners, but friends. I recommend their services with all my heart."
It's the two of us
Aprotax is Alex and Anca Prodan. Accountants, married, and still the people who answer the phone. We started the practice in Bristol in 2019.
We came here from Romania and built this from nothing, which means we've personally filled in HMRC forms in our second language, hoping we'd understood them right. And we've paid for advice without ever being sure whose interest it served.
So we explain things until they make sense. In English or in Romanian, whichever you think in.
